교황, 메쥬고리예 청년 축제에 편지를 보내다

올해 프란치스코 교황 성하께서 이 축제에 참석하는 청년들에게 편지를 보내셨습니다.

“사랑하는 젊은이 여러분!

매년 열리는 메주고리예에서의 청년 대회는 기도와 성찰, 형제적 만남으로 채워진 시간이며, 특별히 성시간과 성체 조배, 그리고 화해의 성사를 통해 살아계신 예수 그리스도를 만나는 기회를 주는 시간입니다. 이 시간은 그렇게 여러분으로 하여금 삶의 다른 길을 찾도록 도와줍니다. 덧없이 지나가는 문화, 그 무엇도 영속적일 수 없는 것들을 따르는, 순간의 기쁨만을 아는 그런 문화가 보여주는 길과는 다른 길을 말입니다. 참되고 확실한 대답을 찾기가 어려운, 이 상대주의의 기류에서는, 축제의 모토인 “와서 보아라 (요한 1,39)”라고 제자들에게 이르신 예수님의 말씀이 바로 축복입니다. 예수님께서도 여러분을 찾고 계시며, 와서 함께 머무르라고 초대하고 계십니다.

두려워하지 마십시오! 그리스도께서는 살아 계시며 여러분이 생기에 넘치기를 바라십니다. 그분께서는 이 세상의 가장 아름다운 젊음이십니다. 그분의 손길이 닿는 모든 것이 젊게 되고 새로워지며 생명으로 충만해집니다 (교황 권고 “그리스도는 살아 계십니다(Christus Vivit)” 1). 이것이 우리가 복음에서 보게되는 두 제자가 주님을 따라올 때 그분께서 물으시는 장면입니다. ‘”무엇을 찾느냐?”하고 물으시자, 그들이 “라삐, 어디에 묵고 계십니까?”하고 말하였다. 예수님께서 그들에게 “와서 보아라.” 하시니,'(요한1,35-39), 그들은 가서, 보고, 머물렀습니다. 예수님과의 만남에 대한 체험은 제자들의 기억에 새겨져서 그 만났던 시간까지도 기록이 되어 있습니다. “때는 오후 네 시쯤이었다(요한1,39)”.

복음서는 주님의 거처에 머물렀던 두 제자들이 이후 어떻게 “중재자”가 되어 다른 이들도 그분을 만나고, 알게 되고, 뒤를 따르게 할 수 있었는지 묘사합니다. 안드레아는 즉시 자신의 경험을 그의 형 시몬과 함께 나누기 위해 갔으며 그를 예수님께로 데려왔습니다. 스승은 그를 보시고 “케파” 즉 “바위”라는 별명을 붙여주셨으며, 후에 그것은 “베드로”라는 이름이 됩니다(요한1,40-42). 이는 예수님과의 만남 안에서 우리가, 바로 그분, 주님께 늘 중심이 맞춰진 상태로, 어떻게 새로운 사람이 되고 어떻게 그 경험을 다른 이들에게 전하는 임무를 받게 되는지를 보여줍니다.

사랑하는 젊은이 여러분, “무엇을 찾느냐”하고 물으시는 예수님의 눈길을 마주한 적이 있습니까? “와서 보아라”하고 말씀하시는 그분의 목소리를 들어본 적이 있습니까? 들고 일어나라는 재촉을 느낀 적이 있습니까?

이 시간을 예수님과 함께 보내십시오. 그분의 영으로 가득채워지고 인생의 모험을 떠날 준비를 갖추게 되도록 말입니다. 그분을 만나기 위해 발걸음을 떼십시오. 기도로 그분과 함께 머무르십시오. 사람의 마음을 아시는 그분께 털어놓으십시오.

“와서 보아라”라는 주님의 아름다운 부르심은 그리스도의 젊고 가장 사랑받던 제자에 의해서 우리에게 전해졌으며, 모든 미래의 제자들에게 하신 말씀입니다. 예수님은 당신을 만나라고 여러분을 초대하시며, 이 축제는 바로 “와서 볼” 수 있는 기회입니다. “오라”는 단어는 물리적인 움직임을 가리키기도 하지만 보다 심오한 영적인 뜻을 담고 있습니다. 이는 궁극적인 목표를 “보는” 데에 두는 신앙의 과정을 가리키며, 그것은 주님을 체험하고, 완전하고 최종적인 우리 존재의 목적을 보여주심에 그분께 감사드리는 데에 있습니다.

젊은 마음이며 새로움과 충실함으로 그리스도를 기꺼이 따르고자 했던 교회의 가장 위대한 모범은 언제나 변함없이 동정녀 마리아입니다. 천사에게 말했던 그녀의 “예”라는 응답과 “그대로 저에게 이루어지소서”라는 말의 힘은 언제나 우리를 기쁘게 합니다. 그녀의 “예”라는 응답은 직접 동참하기를 바라고 기꺼이 위험을 감수하겠다는, 곧 자신이 약속의 전달자임을 알게 된 확신 말고는 다른 아무런 보증도 없이, 모든 것을 감수하겠다는 뜻입니다. “보십시오, 저는 주님의 종입니다(루카1,38)”라는 말씀은 사람이 자신의 자유 의지로 하느님의 손에 스스로를 내어맡길 때 어떻게 되는지 우리에게 알려주는 가장 아름다운 본보기입니다.

이 본보기가 여러분에게 영감을 주고 지침이 되게 하십시오! 마리아는 인생을 사는 우리의 여정에서 종종 지치고 어려움에 처하는 당신의 자녀들인 우리를 보살피고, 희망의 빛을 잃지 않을까 염려하는 어머니입니다. 희망의 빛을 결코 잃지 않는 것은 우리의 바람이기 때문입니다. 우리 어머니이신 마리아는 이 순례하는 사람들, 그녀가 사랑하는 젊은이들, 여정 안에서 겪는 모든 소음과 잡음, 소란 중에도 그 마음 속 침묵 안에서 그녀를 찾는 이들을 바라보고 있습니다.

사랑하는 젊은이 여러분, “우리가 그토록 사랑하는 그리스도의 모습만 바라보며 계속 달려가십시오. 우리가 성체 안에서 경배하는 그분께 이끌려, 고통받는 우리 형제자매들 안에 계시는 바로 그분께 이끌려 달려 나가십시오. 성령께서 이 경주에서 달리는 여러분을 응원해주시기를 바랍니다. 교회는 여러분의 추진력, 여러분의 통찰력, 여러분의 신앙이 필요합니다.” 복음을 위한 이 경주에서, 이번 축제에 의해서도 영감을 받아, 저는 여러분을 복되신 동정 마리아의 중재에 맡기며, 성령께서도 빛과 권능으로 여러분을 참된 그리스도의 증거자가 되게 해주시기를 청합니다. 그러므로 저도 기도하며 여러분을 축복합니다. 여러분도 저를 위해 기도해주시기를 청합니다.”

Dear youth!

The annual encounter of the youth in Medjugorje is the time filled with prayer, reflections and fraternal meeting, time that gives you the opportunity to meet the living Jesus Christ, in a special way in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and in the sacrament of Reconciliation. It thus helps you discover a different way of life, different from the one offered by the culture of the temporary, according to which nothing can be permanent, the culture that knows only the pleasure of the present moment. In this atmosphere of relativism, in which it is difficult to find true and sure answers, the motto of the Festival: »Come, and you shall see« (Jn 1,39), the words used by Jesus to address his disciples – are a blessing. Jesus is also looking at you, inviting you to come and stay with Him.

Do not be afraid! Christ lives and wants you to be alive. He is the true beauty and youth of this world. Everything He touches becomes young, new, full of life and meaning (cf. Apostolic exhortation. Christus vivit, 1). This is exactly what we see in the Gospel scene, in which the Lord asks two disciples following Him: »What are you looking for?«They answer: »Rabbi, where do you live?«, and Jesus tells them: »Come, and you shall see« (cf. Jn 1,35-39). They came, they saw, and they stayed. The experience of meeting Jesus was so imprinted in the disciples’ memory that one of them even recorded the time of the meeting: »It was around four o’clock in the afternoon« (v. 39)

The Gospel describes how, after being in the house of the Lord, the two disciples became »mediators« who made it possible for others to meet, know and inherit Him. Andrew immediately went to share his experience with his brother Simon and brought him to Jesus. The Teacher, seeing him, gave him the nickname: »Kefa«, meaning »the Rock«, which will become the personal name of Peter (cf. Jn 1: 40-42). This shows how in the encounter with Jesus, we become a new person and we receive a mission to pass on that experience onto others, but with a view always focused on Him, on the Lord.

Dear youth, have you met this gaze of Jesus asking you: »What are you looking for?« Have you heard His voice speaking to you: »Come, and you shall see«? Have you felt the urge to set off?

Spend this time with Jesus, to be filled with His Spirit and thus become ready for the adventure of a lifetime. Set off to meet Him, stay with Him in prayer, confide in Him as He knows the human heart.

The beautiful call of the Lord: »Come, and you shall see«, which was conveyed to us by the young and beloved disciple of Christ, is also addressed to all future disciples. Jesus invites you to meet Him, and this Festival is an opportunity to »come and see«. The word »come«, in addition to pointing to physical movement, has more profound spiritual meaning. It points to the course of faith whose ultimate goal is to »see«, that is – to experience the Lord and thanks to Him to see the full and final purpose of our existence.

The great example of the Church that is young in the heart, ready to follow Christ with new freshness and fidelity, always remains the Virgin Mary. The power of Her »Yes« and Her »Let it be unto me« which she said before the angel, delights us at all times. Her »Yes« means to participate and take risks, without any guarantee except knowing that she is the bearer of the promise. Her »Behold the handmaid of the Lord« (Lk 1,38), the most beautiful example that tells us what happens when a man, in his freedom, surrenders himself into God’s hands.

Let this example inspire you and be your guideline! Mary is the Mother who watches »over us, her children, on our journey through life, often weary and in need, anxious that the light of hope not fail. For that is our desire: that the light of hope never fail. Mary our Mother looks at this pilgrim people: a youthful people whom she loves and who seek her in the silence of their hearts amid all the noise, the chatter and the distractions of the journey« (Christus vivit, 48).

Dear youth, »keep running attracted by that face of Christ, whom we love so much, whom we adore in the Holy Eucharist and acknowledge in the flesh of our suffering brothers and sisters.May the Holy Spirit urge you on as you run this race. The Church needs your momentum, your intuitions, your faith« (Ibid, 299). In this race for the Gospel, inspired by this Festival as well, I entrust you to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, invoking the light and the power of the Holy Spirit so that you may be true witnesses of Christ. Therefore, I pray and I bless you, asking you to pray for me, too.
